The University of Manchester Open Research Award 2024

The University of Manchester is pleased to announce our first Open Research Award 2024, recognising outstanding contributions to the University's open research culture over the past year.

Deadline for nominations: Friday, 29 March 2024

The awards ceremony will take place at the Open Research conference to be held on Wednesday, 24 April 2024. 

Recognition and Fellowship

The award winner will:

  • Receive a commemorative trophy

The award winner and highly commended runners up will:

  • Be celebrated at an award ceremony following the Open Research Conference. 
  • Gain the title of Honorary Fellow of the Office for Open Research
  • Be encouraged to act as ambassadors for open research within the University and beyond.
  • Invited to join the network of OR fellowship alumni.
  • Be invited to contribute guest articles to the Open Research Digest. A monthly newsletter which brings together commentary on the latest developments in the open research landscape with updates on the work of the Office for Open Research at The University of Manchester.

  • Academic, Technical and Professional Services staff
  • PGRs
  • Individuals and research teams

How do I nominate?

  • Nominations are invited from all members of University staff and PGRs.
  • Self- nominations are also accepted.

Nomination process

All nominations must be submitted on the Open Research Award 2024 Nomination Form by Friday, 29 March, 2024.

Evidence

Entrants need to demonstrate participation in open research projects undertaken primarily at The University of Manchester, which have been completed or produced since January 2023. Projects producing research outputs and contributions to research culture/infrastructure will be considered equally.

The nomination form requires nominees to submit a case study detailing how open practices have been employed in a research context or how an activity has shaped the environment or infrastructure for open research at The University of Manchester. Submissions may highlight training activities, tool creation, or research projects with openness as a core focus.

Core criteria

Nominations will also be expected to fulfil the following core criteria:

  • Alignment with the University of Manchester’s core principles of open research as set out in our Position Statement on Open Research
  • Primary data – has the supporting research been deposited in a research data repository and made openly available (unless there is a legitimate reason to restrict access)?
  • Research outputs – have they been published open access?
  • Research outputs – do they describe team roles using the CRediT Contributor Roles Taxonomy (optional).

Award process

The Open Research Award will be presented to the winner at the Open Research Conference on Wednesday 24th April. Highly commended nominees will also be invited to the awards ceremony.
